Hello and Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

Israeli Dancing

We will be Israeli Dancing this Monday, February 24 at 7 pm at B'nai Israel. We may dance once more before I go out of town in March. We will resume either March 31 or in April.

We are planning a new beginner series for Israeli Dancing to run an entire year. Not sure of the start date, maybe in the summer or fall. Now is a good time to get started talking to folks about it.

Line Dancing

We are Line Dancing at the Senior Center this Thursday, February 27 and the following Thursday, March 6. We will then have a break and start back up April 3.

Line Dancing in Hawthorne starts back up Tuesday, April 1 at 6 pm. There is no Line Dancing in Hawthorne this week.

Ya Hoo! Western Square Dancing is Coming in April

In April, we will be learning the immensely popular, Western Style Square Dancing Mainstream program, offered via Santa Fe College Community Education.

Back in December, I was in the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas. The valley is called the Square Dance capital of the world, with several square dance sessions every day during the winter. www.rgvsd.com

I went to one of their dances and they would not let me dance!

It was just a bunch of older folks shuffling around. I told them it was no problem, I could keep up.

They said nope, I would screw the whole thing up.

So, I acquiesced and went to class. I am going back in March to finish up and will come back with the 60 Mainstream calls so we can do some Western Style Square Dancing here.

It was not what I thought. It is pretty fun. They dance to all kinds of music. You have to learn the calls. Anyone who can walk, can do it. You do not need any dance skill, so this is great for people that have a fear of dancing or feel uncoordinated. All you have to do is follow directions. Actually, I am not too good at that, but I will be doing the calling.

Other Folk Dancing

English Country Dancers meet Monday and Scottish Dancers meet Tuesday as usual.

The next Contra dance is Sunday, March 2, usually with a waltz lesson at 2:30, a Contra lesson at 3:30 and Contra dancing at 4. To confirm the waltz lesson, contact Andrea Wise, farrever@yahoo.com

The International Folk Dancers next meet Friday March 7.
