Israeli and Senior Line Dancing this Week, International Friday

Hello and Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

Israeli Dancing

There is Israeli Dancing this Monday, March 3 starting at 7 pm at B'nai Israel. This will be our last week this month until March 31. We are planning for a new, year long beginner series. See if you know anyone interested in starting.

Kol Simcha next meets Thursday, March 13 at 6:30 pm. They have a workshop with Dany Benshalom and Ruthy Slann on Saturday and Sunday, March 22 and 23.

Line Dancing

There is Line Dancing at the Senior Center this Thursday, March 6 at noon. We will miss three weeks and return Thursday April 3.

Line Dancing starts back up in Hawthorne also the first week in April on Tuesday, April 1 at 6 pm. There is no Line Dancing in Hawthorne until then.

Western Style Square Dancing

April 10, Thursday at 6 pm, we start the popular, Western Style Square Dancing Mainstream program, offered via Santa Fe College Community Education. You will be able to sign up around March 17 on their website. If you ever want to go to Western Style Square Dancing, you need to at least know the 60 Mainstream calls. I am going to the square dance capital of the world in the Rio Grande Valley to learn the ones I do not know and will bring them back to share with you. www.rgvsd.com

Other Folk Dancing

English Country Dancers and Scottish Dancers meet as usual on Monday and Tuesday.

The International Folk Dancers meet this Friday March 7.

When I Was a Pledge

When I was a pledge for my fraternity as a freshman at UF, we were hazed, teased, tormented, rejected and humiliated, and I do not think it is possible to have more fun than we had then.

You only get to be a beginner once. Enjoy it.

Try not to be judgmental. Avoid labeling yourself as doing good or bad, or comparing yourself to others. The only thing you need to do is show up and participate with a good attitude.

Remember, this is social dancing. Have fun.

When the music comes on, you can only do what you have been trained to do, which takes time. When you are learning you use a different part of your nervous system then when you are doing. As I told someone in my line dance class, “You might know all the steps to a dance and be able to teach it, and still not be able to do it when the music comes on.”

When you go to dances, dance. You have as much right to be there as everyone else, and for sure, the organizer wants you to dance and have a good time. That is their business and you are their customer. They want you to come back. As Israeli dance instructor Nissim Ben Ami says, “You paid your money, get up and dance.”

Happy Dancing,
Andy
