Following Intentionally, Israeli Dancing on Mondays, Free Partner Dancing, Line Dancing on Thursdays
Hello and Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,
Israeli Dancing on Mondays is now from 7 to 8:30 pm. We welcomed back Karen Cohen recently and have a few new people, so we are going a little later. This gives us more time to teach dances and more time to dance. The last part of the evening, we are doing partner dances. Anyone can join us then, around 8:10 to 8:30 for free.
Thursdays Line Dancing at the Senior Center is a mix of all levels. Our typical teaching schedule is beginners from 12 to 12:30, intermediate 12:30 to 1 and advanced 1 to 1:15. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to stay the whole time.
Other folk dancing as usual for this week.
Following Intentionally
The Contra Dance on Saturday night was a lot of fun, as always, even if awfully hot. They did a group mixer and I improvised some moves. It was interesting to see the range of following.
When you dance with a partner, the whole point is to dance WITH your partner. Making a connection with another person. Two people dancing as one, and all that. If you are not going to try to dance as one with your partner, you might as well line dance.
It is not about keeping up appearances. Someone watching, might not be able to tell the difference, but if you are trying to dance as one with your partner, you can tell when your partner is trying to dance as one with you. If she moves a fraction of a second before you lead her, you know, and you might as well be line dancing.
Back at the mixer, I danced with about 15 people, with varying degrees of following, from not-at-all, to following some of the time, to following most of the time, to one that followed everything, which was someone who was a swing dancer, not surprising.
It is not skill. It is intention. To follow, you have to have the intention of following the whole time. Once you have the intention, then you can work on your skill.
Happy Dancing,
Andy
