History from a Visitor, Irish Set Dancing Today, Samba Workshop with Helio Faria, Contra

Hello and Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

Andy's Folk Dancing

We had a new visitor Yosi last Monday, who just moved to Gainesville. Yosi played the accordian for the early group of Israeli Dance choreographers. It was a pleasure to hear his stories. All the dances we do the first part of the evening are from that period. Yosi knows the choreographers and had stories for all of them. He knows Rivka Sturman, one of the real originals and choreographer of Nigun Atik; Yoav Ashriel, who we had here a few years ago, choreographer of Erev Ba; Yankele Levy choreographer of Eretz Eretz, with Shlomo Bachar, who we also had here; Jonathan Gabay choreographer of Yedid Nefesh and Sulam Yaakov; and many others. These are the first dances people learn in all the Israeli Dance groups and many of the International Folk Dance groups. What a treat to have this personal connection to history.

Israeli Dancing on Monday 7 to 8:30 pm at B'nai Israel, $5.

Thursday Line Dancing at the Senior Center is at noon, mix of all levels. This Thursday is week 4 of 4. You can sign up now for the next four week series starting August 7. Our typical teaching schedule is beginners from 12 to 12:30, intermediate 12:30 to 1 and advanced 1 to 1:15. Everyone is encouraged to stay the whole time.

Other Folk Dancing

Irish Set Dancing today, Sunday at 4:30 at Loosey's downtown Gainesville.

Wednesday is a Contra Dance for Beginners at the Civic Media Center at 7:30, $8. Next Sunday is the regular monthly afternoon Contra Dance at the Boltin Center at 4 pm.

Next Saturday is a Samba Workshop with Helio Faria from Brazil at the Movement at noon, $10.

Other regular weekly folk dances as usual.
