Time Change for Israeli Dancing this Week, Contra Today, Irish Wednesday, International Friday

Hello and Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

Andy's Folk Dancing

Tisha B'av starts Monday at dark, so we are going to start Israeli Dancing a half hour earlier this week at 6:30 and end at 8 pm.

Tisha B'av, the 9th day of the month of Av, is the Jewish day of mourning, representing a number of calamaties that befell the Jewish people. Primarily they are the destruction of the first and second temple. The expulsions from Spain in 1492 and England in 1290 are also attributed to this date. Traditionally the observance is a 25-hour fast (no water either) and sitting barefoot on the floor reading Kohellet (Lamentations), which you can join in with the other observers in the synagogoue after dancing.

Sign up with SFC for a new four week Line Dancing series starting this Thursday at the Senior Center at noon. Our typical teaching schedule is beginners from 12 to 12:30, intermediate 12:30 to 1 and advanced 1 to 1:15. Everyone is encouraged to stay the whole time.

Other Folk Dancing

Beginning Irish Set Dancing on Wednesday at 7:30 pm at the Civic Media Center.

International Folk Dancing meets this Friday for the first of two times this month.

Other regular weekly folk dances as usual.

Know the Basics

You know from this newsletter, I have been doing a lot of beginning classes. I also have been doing a lot of private lessons. I also take lessons and practice on my own. No matter what dance, and what level, it is suprising how the same principles come to the front. Maybe that should not be surprising, but I can remember when I started dancing, there just seemed like so much, and every dance seemed so different.

Now, whether I am a student or a teacher, I find myself repeating the same things everywhere. The most important is balance. Pay attention to the basics about balance. That will help you more than anything.
