Senior Line Dancing on Tuesday, not Thursday this Week, Happy New Year, International Friday

Hello and Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

Israeli Dancing this and every Monday at B'nai Israel at 7 pm, $5. We are back in the usual room, the social hall, around the left side. We will be dancing every Monday through the holidays. There are no conflicts.

Line Dancing at the Senior Center is on Tuesday at 12:30 this week, since Thursday is Rosh Hashanah. All other dancing is at the usual time and place.

For those wanting to start Line Dancing at the Senior Center, a new series starts the beginning of August. See below to sign up via SFC Community Education.

Friday the International Folk Dancers meet. They are probably Gainesville's longest running dance group, or at least one of them. Folk dancing is a lot of fun. Get there at the beginning, when they take more time to teach dances.

Happy New Year

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins Wednesday night. Rosh means head. Hashanah means the year. Rosh Hashanah is head of the year. Rosh Yeshiva is head of the yeshiva, or school. Rosh Rikkudim is head of the dance, that would be me, alas no, the dance leader is called a markid. On Rosh Hashanah, Sefardim, Spanish Jews, and Yememi (Yemenite Jews), and Mizrachi (eastern Jews), set their table with exotic foods, including the head of a fish. The most traditional food though for all Jews is apples and honey for a sweet, new year.

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the Jewish High Holy Days. The month leading up to Rosh Hashanah is a period of preparation for the Days of Awe. The Days of Awe are from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur. During this time, God writes your name in books for the new year, who will live and who will die, who will have a good life and who will have a bad life, who will be rich and who will be poor, and who will dance with happy feet and who will lie slovenly on a couch. On Rosh Hashanah it is written and Yom Kippur it is sealed. Repentance, prayer and good deeds during the Days of Awe can anul the severity of the decree. During this time, we wish people "Gmar Chatima Tova", which literally means "may your finished sealing be good", but in context means, "may you be sealed in the books for a good, meaningful, happy and healthy life for the new year".
