Israeli and English on Monday, Line Dancing at the Senior Center this Week and Next, International Friday

Hello and Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

Israeli Dancing this Monday, as always. 7 pm at B'nai Israel. Israel Partner Dances at 8 pm. $5

Friday night this week and next is International Folk Dancing at 7:45 at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4225 NW 34 Street. $3

Anything you will not do, you will not be able to do. If you stop walking up stairs, because you find walking up stairs difficult, you will not be able to walk up stairs any more. My mother is 82 years old. She walks two to three miles every morning. Our house is a split level. She walks up and down the steps all day. She has friends that live in ranch houses, with no steps. I have to help them up the one step from our garage into our house.

The Atrium asked me to teach line dancing to their residents. The one woman that could do it, a former dance teacher, did not come back after the first week, because it was too easy. The rest complained the whole time. "The lines in the floor are making me dizzy." One said, "this is the only place in the whole building anyone is moving."

The third week, no one came, except a 90 year old guy in a wheel chair, and one lady in her 70s who was taking care of him. She came because she saw my name and she is one of my students from the Senior Center. When she started, she was so unstable, I was afraid she was going to fall taking a single step. Two years later, I am so proud of her, I feel like she was my own kid learning to play ball. To see her do, kind of, every one of our dances is heartwarming. How did she do it? She came every week. She did not worry about her progress. She trusted her teacher. Well she was a teacher of gifted students. She understands the learning process.

If these other ladies would dance, they would get stronger. Their balance would get better. They could line dance at the socials. They would have some fun. They are the ones that requested line dancing, but they will not even give it a chance for three weeks. They are not that old. Most are younger than my mom. It is like that old saying. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot teach him to foxtrot. I made a funny.

At Tango tonight, we had two people (not together) in their 80s dancing as well as anyone there. Keep dancing. Never stop. It is a lot better than having the floor make you dizzy.
