What Does It All Mean?

The other day our neighbor Tex knocked on our door. Tex is 95 years old, Swedish, and his mother lived to be over 102. He was locked out of his house, because his key only opened the door knob and not the dead bolt. He used our phone to call his wife, who did not answer.

Since I had done this before, though Tex did not know it, I said, "Let me give it a try." I took Tex's key and ran down the hill to his house. I went around back, climbed over the second story fence around their porch, got in through an open door, unlocked the front door and came back home to get Tex.

Tex was amazed I got the lock to work. He was speaking Swedish most of the time, until my mom yelled at him to speak English. Tex was a hardy, independent man, world class physicist and tough minded. He did not like being old. With a Swedish accent he said, "I used to fix things too, you know." Then something interesting happened.

When a 95 year old person, especially one as intellectual as Tex, starts telling you about life, you listen, at least I do. My mom was not interested. Tex said, "It is not good to get old." (That sucks to hear.) Tex said when he was young some men took him fishing. He said he did not like the fishing, because the fish were living creatures and the men killed the fish.

Tex said you live your life, and at the end you are old and weak. In the animal world, all living creatures die a violent death, because when they get weak they get eaten by some other animal. We get old and weak and we can still live on for a while.

Then Tex asked the question, "What does it all mean?"

I can tell you, Tex asking that question disturbs me. If any 95 year old guy could figure out the answer, Tex would be the guy. If you are a person of faith, other than Atheism like Tex, you can pass the question off to the Creator. While that may give you comfort, it does not answer the question.

What does it all mean? That is one of the great questions. I will tell you the answer in just a moment, but first a warning. Never ask such questions at night. You would not go to the gym and work out when you are feeling weak. Neither should you challenge your mind, when your defences are not up to the task.

What does it all mean? I will tell you. Dance while you can.

Happy Dancing,
Andy
