Baruch Dayan HaEmet

Hello and Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

With great sadness, I am sharing the following announcement from Rabbi Kaiman. I will be going to the shiva minyan on Monday at 6 pm. I expect to be back for Israeli Dancing by 7 pm. If I am a little late, no worries. I will come directly to B'nai Israel after the service.

A decade or more ago, Libby taught Erin King, Laura Wise and I how to read from the Torah. She was a wonderful teacher, strict, but not critical. You have to chant the Torah, meaning, you have to sing notes. I could only sing one note, known as Andy off-key. I was apprehensive, to say the least, to sing, you cannot really call it that, in front of other people. Libby somehow made me sing in class. Erin helped me to get a few more notes. To this day, I always remember how Libby conducted class. If there is something that you like about how I conduct our class, Libby probably deserves credit. Sometime after our Torah reading class, Libby had a party celebrating her ten years free of cancer. She had a klezmer band. Before she got sick, Libby used to dance. She wanted people to dance at the party, but she did not want chaos. She wanted some structure to the dancing. She had Juliana Azoubel and I lead the dancing at the event.

What does Baruch Dayan HaEmet mean? Baruch is usually translated as blessing or praise. Dayan means judge. HaEmet means the truth. Dayan HaEmet refers to an attribute of God and is used here as a reference to God.

Our hearts are torn to announce the passing of our dear member, Dr. Libby Brateman. Libby was a long time member of Congregation B'nai Israel and was dearly beloved by many friends in the congregation and the general community. She was a woman of great talent and her genuine smile and friendship will be sorely missed. We remember her vitality, celebration and appreciation for each day of health. We send our heartfelt condolences to her sister Neesa and to the rest of her family and friends.

Funeral services (graveside) and interment will be on Monday, May 7th at 3:00pm at Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery. There will be a shiva minyan on Monday evening at 6:00pm at Libby's home, 2721 NW 37th Terrace, Gainesville Florida.

Please note that we will shortly be announcing a date and time for a memorial service in honor of Libby in the coming weeks.

Min Ha'shamayim T'nuchamu - May your solace come from heaven.

Waltz and Contra Today, Israeli Monday, Yom Haatzamut Video

Hello and Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

Here is the video of us Israeli dancing at Depot Park for Yom Haatzmaut.

Here is the a video of just our version of an Israeli Dance for Hava Nagila. These are the steps.

  1. Hora - right, behind, right, kick left, step left, kick right (singing hava nagila)
  2. Step hop, triple step (singing hava nerunana)
  3. Step slow, step slow, step, step, step, step (transition, singing, oo, pause, ru, pause, oo, ru, rachim)
  4. Open mayim with little leap behind (right, left in front, right, left little leap behind)
  5. End step touches to both side, slow rock back and forward until start over

The band Notorious is playing today Sunday at the Boltin Center. From 11 am to 2 pm is a Waltz Brunch. From 4 to 7 pm is a Contra Dance. $15 for one dance, $25 for two
