Dance Quotes

If a man empties his purse into his head no one can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest. ~ Benjamin Franklin, 1706-1790

How Long Does It Take To Learn To Dance?

The question this article addresses is how much time do you need to put in to acquire enough skill to be comfortable dancing. By comfortable I mean comfortable dancing socially, outside your group class, with people you do not know well.

Of course, this is subjective. People are different. What I am giving you is my impression of what I have seen from the last decade or two of assisting beginners to learn to dance.

The important point is dancing is a skill, not knowledge. Acquiring a skill takes repetition, lots of repetition. Think of acquiring the skill of playing the piano, speaking another language or playing a sport, like tennis. How much do you have to practice before you can consistently hit a tennis ball into the court?

The amount of time depends mainly on the type of dance.

In pretty much all dancing, you dance to a rhythm. While you should dance to the rhythm, some dances you can still dance without keeping the rhythm. These are the easiest dances. As long as the leader keeps the patterns of the dance simple enough, you can do these types of dances on your first day, with minimal training. These dances include Contra Dancing, English Country Dancing, Square Dancing and Universal Peace Dances.

Much dancing does require that you keep the rhythm. Some rhythms are simpler than others. The simplest rhythm is to step on every beat or every other beat of the music. That is, you walk in time to music. As long as you keep the patterns of these dances simple, you can start to do these dances your first day. If you go dancing once a week, say for an hour, you will likely start to feel comfortable doing these dances within a few weeks or months. These dances include Hustle 4 Count, Merengue, Society Tempo and Waltz Country Style.

Other rhythms take more time to train your body. If you are a beginner, to get comfortable doing these types of dances, you probably need to go twice a week, for an hour or more each time, for a couple of years. These dances include most of the social partner dances, folk dances and line dances, such as Argentine Tango, Ballroom Dances, International Folk, Israeli, Line, Salsa and Swing.

In some partner dances, you have the option of dancing in body contact. Dancing in body contact requires a lot of training. When you want to train to dance in body contact, find a willing partner and just do it.

Acquiring the skill of dancing is a lifetime pursuit. The process of acquiring a new skill, makes people uncomfortable. Enjoy the uncomfortableness.
