Dance Quotes

Try to be a little charming ~ Edith Weitzen, my mom, from my book How To Dance With a Partner

Try To Be a Little Charming

When we socialize, we need to be a little ingratiating. There may be no activity more social than partner dancing. Social time is not the time to take out your vengeance on your past demons with those around you. We should let apparent slights pass by without concern. We should be appreciative that others are spending time with us. We should try to make others feel good.

On Sunday, I led 5 minutes of dancing, well shuffling, at the Shabbatones Israel 75 Anniversary Concert. The audience was filled with my friends. I must have known at least fifty people by name. Some of them were dancers.

At a program some years ago at the Unitarian Fellowship Church, 300 people got up to dance with me without any coaxing.

This day, about 15 or so danced, which is not bad. None of the dancers got up. So many others could have but did not join in. Well, they did not have my dad.

Fortunately Norm and Ros Levy and Ilene Silverman were there. They can always be counted on. I would rather go through life being like Ros, Norm, and Ilene.

The Buddha taught the secret to happiness is low expectations. Hillel says, "Do not do to anyone else what you would not want done to you." Last week, Leviticus taught you are to love your neighbor as yourself.

Two parts from my book How To Dance With a Partner.

Tell Your Organizers What You Need

"That song was terrible. It had no beat," said Richard.

"What are you telling me now for?” I answered. “Tell me at the beginning so I can put on another song,"

Tell your group organizers what you need to feel comfortable. The music may not be loud enough or may be too loud. Sometimes live bands play too fast or too slow if they are not used to playing for dancers. The floor may be too slippery. The room may be too hot or too cold. You might not be getting an opportunity to dance. If you are uncomfortable, do not feel bad because the solution is beyond your control. Tell your group organizers. Do not wait until the end of the evening to complain. Tell them early enough so they can address the issue. They want to know how they can help you. Others may have the same issue.

and

Support Your Organizers

At social functions, my Dad used to make me participate. I would try to hide because I was embarrassed. I would want to wait until I saw a lot of other people doing the thing, but my Dad would make me be the first one out there. He would say to me, "You have to help out the people who are organizing this. You are young, tall, and good-looking. When other people see you up there, they will join in."

Other people put a lot of their heart into organizing activities for you to enjoy. Do what you can to help make the programs a success.

I keep mentioning my book and for the last dozen years. Actually I have two books. They will be available in wide release this month. Will let you know.

Happy dancing, Andy
