Hello and Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

This is a busy weekend, starting with Josh's West Coast Swing dance on Friday night. Saturday night is the monthly Contra dance. Also Saturday is Tango Y Te with David and Thuy. Sunday is the monthly Vintage Waltz Brunch. See below for the link to the calendar with details.

My SFC Community Ed classes have all ended, except for Line Dancing at the Senior Center at noon on Thursdays. Come out Monday nights at 7 pm and join me for Israeli Dancing. A lot of fun, great music, the best choreography, circle, line and partner dances. Only $5.

On TCM, came across the movie Another Thin Man, from 1939. They were in a night club and dancing Argentine Tango, so I watched for a moment. In Argentina, you make eye contact with your potential partner before asking her to dance. This is called cabaceo. I have not been to Argentina, so I have not seen this practiced authentically in person. Here is cabaceo from 1939. Start watching at 5:00 and look for cabaceo at 5:32.

There is a Hasidic teaching of Rabbi Simcha Bunem of Pershyscha, who happened to be a lover of dance. Like the rest of us, there were times when he was afraid of making mistakes, so he put a piece of paper in his left pocket on which he wrote, "for my sake the world was created." When he felt timid, he would reach into his left pocket and read what he had written. At other times, when he felt he was losing patience with someone not as experienced as himself, he reached into his right pocket, took out a slip of paper and read "I am but dust and ashes." Remember, balance is the most important skill in dancing.
