Walk on a Line, SFC Registration Open, UTC Available, Tonight in Ocala, Tango Milonga, Ballroom, Swingtastics

Hello and Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

The Unified Training Center has space available in three different rooms. I was told they fixed their air-conditioning and made other upgrades. They have a small room available for private lessons, the front room is good for smaller groups, and then they have the large space. They also have the mat area, if you want to practise your lifts. Rates sound reasonable. Call Lilly at 352-538-5814. You can tell her I referred you.

This Weekend

Tonight, Friday, head to Ocala for a dance social with Dance 2 the Music Ocala, in the Southeast Livestock Pavilion from 7 to 10 pm.

Saturday night is an Argentine Tango Milonga El Abrazo with a lesson at 8 pm with Sarah, who has newly returned from two months in Argentina. Come by and see what she picked up. At the Movement. $10, free to watch

Also Saturday is Ray and Eileen's Ballroom Dance at By Ear Musician.

Sunday, Nick and the Swingtastics make their monthly appearance at Loosey's from 7 to 10 pm for swing dancing. $7

Walk on a Line

Line, folk, Israeli and international dancing can make you a better partner dancer. You have an opportunity to practice your dance skills, while having fun dancing. The most important skill, of course, is balance, but what does that mean and how do you practice it to help your partner dancing?

In my line and Israeli sessions, beginning dancers think if they only knew the steps to the dance, they could do the dances. Knowing the steps certainly helps, but the main problem is they do not have the skill. The most important skill they are missing is balance.

People tend to normally walk with their feet underneath their hips, one foot to either side, with their body in the middle wobbling slightly. They are never balanced when they take a step. They are endlessly falling from one foot to another, until they come to a stop standing on both feet. This may be an efficient mechanism for walking. You can walk twenty miles in a day without training. However, it is a problem for dancing.

When dancing, not being balanced over each step is a problem, because you have already committed to your next step, before you know where it is. In line dancing, on a four beat measure, we often go quick, quick, slow, which is the same as step, step, step, pause. Beginning line dancers, who are not balanced over each step, cannot pause, but instead, take a fourth step. They are then on the wrong foot or on the wrong beat of music and possibly going in the wrong direction. The same thing happens in partner dancing.

The way you balance over each step is to walk on a line. You can practice this whenever you walk around. Instead of walking with your feet under your hips, take each step on a line directly underneath your body, bringing your knees and ankles together as you walk. To test yourself, slow down. Walk slowly and pause after each step to see if you are balanced.

Happy Dancing,
Andy
