Maintaining Your Own Balance

Here is a quick thought about balance. Do you need to have a partner to practice your movements? In other words, do you move the same without your partner as you do with your partner? Or, do you need the physical support of your partner to move?

Turn Back the Clock

My mom and I saw a great movie tonight "Turn Back the Clock", a movie from 1933, great for its historicity. The Three Stooges with Curly make their first, an uncredited straight role, apppearance in film. Joe Gimlet, played by the star Lee Tracy, is happily married, but not financially well-off. He runs into an old friend from high school, who is now wealthy. Joe complains to his wife that he could have married the woman his friend married and been wealthy himself. He gets drunk. They have a fight. He walks out, gets hit by a car, goes to the hospital for an operation and dreams he has another shot at life from 20 years before.

There are the themes of if you made different choices would your life be better, appreciating what you have, and a depression era, money does not make you happy. The movie is a predecessor of "It's a Wonderful Life, Back to the Future, Family Man and many others." Wonder if this was the first talking movie of this genre and if the genre appeared in silent films.

Since he goes back in time, watching this film, there is a double-time warp for us as viewers. You have to imagine yourself living in 1933 to get the jokes. He goes back to before World War I. When Joe asks his mother which Roosevelt she is referring to, she is referring to Teddy, of course. The movie was made right after after Franklin got elected. The movie is filled with these contemporary-for-the-time gags, which movie goers then would have gotten, but to us, both seem archaic.

Which brings us lastly to why such a story would be in a dance newsletter. For me, watching this film of the past, which was so happy with itself for its clever references to its past, I think of what we do not know we owe to the people before us that we do not know.

Happy Dancing,
Andy
