Men Needed, this Monday Semi-Private Swing, Salsa and Tango Classes, Blue Moon Milonga, Advanced Contra Dance, Boot Camp, Ballroom Salsa

Hello and Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

There is a lot of news this week, with some new sessions starting up.

Monday Nights

Semi-private Swing dancing sessions start this Monday, June 1. This is a 5 week series focusing on rhythm turns, including Lindy style rhythm turns and West Coast Swing whip turns. Instruction is adjusted to the individual needs of those attending. You will learn how to master these types of movements, how to improvise variations and how to match them to the music, communicating through your body and maintaining your own balance, without the use of force and without throwing your partner off balance. Suitable for all levels, including beginners, but not novices. The cost is $15 per session or $60 for the 5 weeks in June (one week free). You can stay afterwards at no charge for Israeli Dancing and then our 8:30 pm session, if we have one.

Hustle, Salsa, Tango. Let me know if you would like to join a small group for Hustle, Salsa or Argentine Tango on Mondays at 8:30 pm. The cost for this session is $10.

Men Needed. I try to gender balance these sessions. We could use another leader.

Contact me if you would like to join us on Monday nights, near Fresh Market for dancing.

More Dancing

This is the fifth Saturday and Sunday of the month, which means two special dances. Saturday night is a Blue Moon Argentine Tango Milonga Papirusa at the Movement. Sunday afternoon is an Advanced Contra Dance at 4 pm at the Boltin Center, with waltzing starting at 2:30 pm.

Josh and Judi are holding a Swing and Country Summer Boot Camp on Wednesdays in June. See here for details. www.facebook.com/events/973578852705736

Ray and Eileen are teaching a Ballroom Salsa series on Thursday nights at By Ear Musician.

Character

Last night I watched the movie Arbitrage. Richard Gere's character is a billionaire. He gets into a car accident that kills his mistress. Gere is under tremendous financial pressure. Publicity of this accident would ruin the deal he is trying to close that will save him from bankruptcy. Gere manages to walk away, gets to a phone booth and calls the son of his former driver to pick him up.

The young man is an ex-convict, married and trying to get his life on track. Gere does not tell him what happened, but gives the young man specific instructions about picking Gere up.

The detective investigating the accident knows Gere did it. To get a conviction, the detective pressures the young man. The detective threatens the young man with obstruction of justice and a return to prison as a second time offender for ten years. The young man's lawyer tells the young man the detective's case against him is strong and he would go back to jail. The young man's wife encourages the young man to make a deal. The detective takes the young man to the grand jury and shows the jury photographic evidence of the young's man car going through a toll booth on the night of the accident.

Gere, Gere's lawyer and the young man are riding in the back of Gere's limosine. The young man says to Gere, "Why did you put me in this position?" Gere asks the young man how he is doing and the young man says, "You think I am a snitch?".

They let the young man out of the car and the lawyer asks Gere, "Why did you call him? Why didn't you call your son?"

While Gere is a renegade, his kids are nice, upright people, not convicted fellons like the young man. Gere says, "My son would have screwed this up. He [the young man] is not like us." The unspoken words were, "He has character."

Gere had given the young man instructions to avoid the toll roads and the young man followed the instructions. The detective falsified the evidence.

The young man was a rock and never waivered. Gere was right. Gere's son, though a good person, could not be depended upon to hold up under pressure. The young man was hardened, he knew to follow instructions precisely in a crisis, he could not be tricked by the detective and he did not buckle under pressure. He had honor and character. Someone can teach you how to get them, but you still have to earn them. Just like dancing.
