We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us really happy is something to be enthusiastic about. ~ Charles Kingsley

Review of 6-Count West Coast Swing Basic Structure

In our Monday sessions we are learning general principles for all swing dancing. For some of you this is new and for some a review.

First, you can count swing music as: 1, 2, 3-and-4, 5, 6, 7-and-8. This is called an 8-count phrase. Much popular music follows this format. When you listen to music, try counting the rhythm.

When we dance swing to an 8-count phrase, we step to the rhythm, so the steps are: walk, walk, triple step, walk, walk, triple step.

We can dance swing to just 6-counts of the 8-count phrase. In this case, we leave out the second walk, walk and the steps are: walk, walk, triple step, triple step.

We can dance swing to any even length longer than 8-counts by adding walk, walks, as in: walk, walk, walk, walk, triple step, walk, walk, walk, walk, walk, walk, triple step.

In every case, we do one triple step in the beginning part and one triple step at the end to get back to our starting feet. The music along with this structure is basically what makes a dance, swing dancing.

Here is a video of a way to do triple steps - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJv5yatKRHU

We have been gravitating towards West Coast Swing style, so below are links to our basic West Coast Swing movements.

We use these five 6-count basic movements for teaching purposes.
- Sugar Push
- Side Pass
- Side Pass with Under Arm Turn
- Sugar Tuck
- Side Pass with Tuck Turn
