Registration Now for Beginning Tango and Swing, Lots of Dancing, Helping Others

Hello and Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

Register now for beginning dance classes via Santa Fe College Community Education www.sfcollege.edu/cied/communityed. Beginning Argentine Tango at 6 pm and Beginning Swing at 7 pm at Gainesville High School on Thursday nights starting September 3. These are suitable for people who have never danced before. The emphasis is on having fun and introducing people to these dances and social dancing in general. Other dance classes are: Ballroom Dancing for Couples with Ray and Eileen, Tap Dancing with Chaya Heller, Belly Dancing with Marjorie Malerk, Acro Balance and Brazilian Samba and Forro with Corey Souza.

Let me know if you are interested in a Monday night dance session at 8:45 pm in either Hustle, Salsa, Lindy Swing or Tango. In our West Coast Swing session at 6 pm we continue for the next two weeks with tuck turns, focusing on closed position one-handed, which is both one of the most useful and most connected movements you do in swing dancing, my favorite. We start a new series for September and October, which will meet 5 times, missing a few Mondays due to the Jewish holidays. We will revisit whip turns, with themes focusing on musicality and smoothness of movement.

The North Florida Tango Festival in Gainesville is Labor Day weekend with professional dancers Daniela Pucci and Luis Bianchi. Take this rare opportunity to attend some workshops, enjoy the milongas and see professionals perform. www.andreahoapham.com/mini-tango-festival-with-daniela-pucci-and-luis-bianchi

You can still sign up for River City Swing, www.rivercityswing.com, and join the Gainesville table, www.facebook.com/events/1436312393339868, with Josh Angel, joshuadancer79@gmail.com.

Tonight, Friday, come out for Josh's 3rd Friday West Coast Swing Dance at the Movement at 7:30. Or dance swing to 50s and 60s music with Hot Rod Lincoln at Gator Tales from 8 to midnight.

Saturday night Argentine Tango Papirusa meets at the Unified Training Center at 8 pm. Ballroom Dancers meet at By Ear Musician with Ray and Eileen.

If you have been to any of my classes, you know I preach the best way to help someone else is to do just do what you are supposed to do, accept others for where they are at and let them take care of themselves. Randy and Annette came to my swing and hustle classes for years before starting their dance group and they apply the same principles. You can join the English Country Dance group here. www.facebook.com/groups/133320053438693. See what Annette says about dancing with others, from her newsletter.

Dear Dancers,

Just a reminder. Please only guide new dancers with eyes and gestures. There are so many reasons: it's disorienting to have someone move you around; it's demeaning; in the next round they still don't have their own sense of movement; it might even hurt someone. The best way is without words, or if it is necessary, only one or two words. Remember the caller is really doing the explaining and it's not helpful for someone who is new to have two people explaining the same thing at the same time.

Most people do such a great job at this. And thank you all for being so welcoming and encouraging new dancers! ...

Randy and Annette

Some fun dancing to watch West Coast Swing Jack n Jill. At 7:50 is Benji Schwimmer, winner of Think You Can Dance with Jennifer Deluca from Orlando. At 16:10 is a variant of a closed position tuck turn, which is our theme this month on Monday night. At 27:50 is the group dance, the best part, funny. Watch to the end and see the master make all the other professionals take a seat. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iYHgNppSw4

Happy Dancing,
Andy
