Lots of Dancing this Weekend, Swing, Contra, Tango, New Classes with Andy

Hello and Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

Lots of dancing this weekend, some in new places. Friday night is Josh's 3rd Friday Country Westie Dance at the Movement. The UF Swing Club meets at the UTC. Swing and Sway Evening Dance is at Rena's ballroom.

Saturday night the Contra Dance is at the Boltin Center. David and Thuy Host Tango y Te after their return from the Portland Tango Festival. Swing Theory Plays Live Jazz at Market Street.

Sunday the Vintage Waltz Brunch is at Rena's Ballroom.

In Ocala, C4 Dance Academy and West Coast Swing Dancers meet most days of the week, check the calendar for details.

Dancing with Andy

There are a several new series starting up over the next month or so. If you see something for you, let me know you would like to join us. No partner needed. We do rotate partners. We are couples friendly and you do not have to rotate.

This is gentle, non-judgmental social dancing. You learn to dance without any pushing and pulling, and no one tells anyone else what to do. You learn to live with, and enjoy whatever you get from your partner. The sessions are a mix of class and dance social. A lot of time is allocated to dancing so you get to dance that week, even if you do not go out dancing elsewhere.

  1. Monday Night West Coast Swing New Beginners is from 5:30 to 6:15. A new, small group of beginners is getting started. A good time to start is with other newcomers. A six-week series for newcomers will run from February 29 to April 4. You can get a head start on this group, if you like, and start this Monday February 22. You are encouraged to stay afterwards for the regular session and either participate or just practice what you learned until 7:15.

    Monday Night West Coast Swing Regular Session is from 6:15 to 7:15. This is a nice, friendly group of mixed levels. We focus on basic skills and exploration. A six-week series on Whip Turns runs from February 29 to April 4. You can get a head start on this, if you like, and start this Monday February 22. You are encouraged to come early and either participate in the beginner class or just have fun and dance from 5:30 to 6:15.

    You are invited to stay afterwards on Monday nights for Israeli Dancing from 7:15 to 8:30, which a number of people have been doing.

    The cost for Monday nights is 6 weeks for $75 (one week free) or $15 per night.

  2. Five Thursday Nights of Salsa and Lindy-style Swing in March with Salsa at 6 and Swing at 7 pm. This is a continuation of our Thursday SFC Continuing Education Series. This is open to anyone that wants to have some fun dancing Salsa and Lindy. You can be a new beginner or have some experience. The cost for Thursday night is 5 weeks for $60 (one week free) or $15 per night, and includes both Salsa and Lindy. If you would like to do both Monday and Thursday nights the cost is $120 for 11 sessions (three weeks free).
  3. Line Dancing at the Senior Center on Thursdays from noon until 1 pm. A new four week series starts March 3 and another six week series starts April 7. Register via Santa Fe College Community Education (SFC) by calling 352-395-5193 or visit www.sfcollege.edu/cied/communityed under Seniors.
  4. Beginning April 7 on Thursday nights, via Santa Fe College Community Education, there will be two new series: Argentine Tango and West Coast Swing. Surely you have seen many announcements about Tango. This series will give you a chance to experience the Tango, in a casual, fun atmosphere, without the intensity you find in serious Tango classes. While one of the most difficult dances, suprisingly Tango can be one of the easiest as well, since all you have to do is walk slowly. We will be doing the easy version in this series. The cost for each series is $64. You have to register for each one separately via SFC Community Ed.
