Deepen Your Understanding

At synagogue, I was reading the commentary for the prayer for the establishment of Shabbat. This is a kabbalistic prayer written as a backward acrostic. The first letter of each word forms the Hebrew alphabet backwards, starting with the last letter Tav and finishing with the first letter Aleph. The Tav symbolizes completion. The backward acrostic teaches that when you have completed your studies, you should go back to the beginning to deepen your understanding.

I told the Rabbi that I had written in my dance newsletter that people should go back to the basics to get better. When you repeat the basics, you learn things you missed earlier.

The Rabbi said that the reason I noticed that commentary now was because I had written about going back to the basics. We read that blessing three times every Shabbat. I had not noticed that the blessing was a backward acrostic before. You might think repeating the same blessings is a waste. Why not learn something new. Repeating the same blessings, is like going back to the basics. You deepen your understanding.

Henry David Thoreau observed that people that traveled around the world to see new things, after a while, were seeing the same thing in different places. Thoreau wrote that he preferred to get to know his own backyard in depth.

Whether praying, dancing or traveling, both broadening your horizons and gaining insights can be meaningful. It is all good. We need both.

The same applies to people. It is good to meet new people. It is good to get to know some people better.
