Can People Change, Friday Dancing, Argentine Tango Workshops

Hello and Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

Friday Gosia and Ali are at Rena's Ballroom at 7 to 11 pm, $12. Also Friday is the monthly Melrose Contra Dance.

Jorge and Anabel from Argentina are teaching workshops this weekend in Argentine Tango with a dance Saturday night. Try to attend a workshop and come out to the dance. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn from professional dancers.

Also Saturday night is a Ballroom Dance at Rena's from 8 to 10:30 pm.

Dancing with Andy

First, congratulations to all of you that have been in my Monday and Thursday sessions for having come so far. It takes a long time to develop a new dancer. This week you were legitimately dancing Hustle, Salsa, West Coast Swing and Argentine Tango, good enough to do so at a dance social. How did you come so far so fast? There is no substitution for playing time. You progress faster dancing 4 or 5 hours a week than dancing only 1 hour a week.

We are on break from dancing for the next two weeks, because I will be out of town. We will have one week of dancing on Monday May 29 and Thursday June 1, during which we will re-visit Waltz and Rumba. We will start a new six week series on Monday June 5 and Thursday June 8.

Can People Change

In the movie Knocked Up, the out-of-wedlock, knocked up (pregnant) sister says, "I thought you are supposed to accept people for the way they are."

The older, married sister says, "You are supposed to criticize them, so they feel so bad about themselves, they are forced to change."

We have all heard someone say, "People do not change." People do change. What would be the point of dance classes, if they did not? The problem for each of us, is other people do not change in the way we want in the time we want.

However, both you and the person you are trying to change tend to move in a compatible direction. That is about the best we can hope for.

The most important thing you learn at social dance classes is how to get along with everyone else. Sometimes you can feel that others at your dance classes are your greatest nemesis, and they are. They are also your dance family. They are the ones preparing you for dancing in the wild. They are the friendly faces you will look for when you go out in the wild.

Before I had ever had a serious girlfriend, I complained to a friend of mine, "I have so many problems, because I do not have a girlfriend."

My friend, who had had serious girlfriends said, "You do not have any problems. When you get a girlfriend, then you will have problems."

This is dancing. This is life. You mix things up with others, things get messy. Learn to be happy with where you and others are at.
