Rules for Dancing Argentine Tango

Here is an interesting set of rules for an Argentine Tango event Steve Litter is going to near Chicago.

En Tu Abrazo Encuentro Milonguero is a gathering of like-minded dancers with a shared passions for milonguero connections while dancing to traditional tango music.

Four days of Tango Milonguero with seven milongas (including the pre- milonga)

With an amicable ambiance that is gender balanced, providing separate seating for men, woman & couples who use Mirada & Cabaceo to invite others to dance.

Where we follow traditional Codes of Conduct including making and accepting invitations to dance from our seat and always respecting those already dancing.

The Idea

This Encuentro Milonguero is a unique event focused on the sharing a full weekend of traditional tandas in twice-a-day milongas with friends and strangers alike. It is quite different from other tango events in that there are no teachers, workshops, performances or live orchestras.

All dancers agree to respect the traditional “Codigos de Tango” and appreciate what they have to offer their milonguero dance:

– There will be separate seating for men, women and couples.

– Everyone selects a seat when they arrive at each milonga and keep that seat throughout that milonga.

– We stay seated as we extend and accept invitations to dance, using the “mirada” and “cabeceo”.

– Once we agree to dance together, the man quickly crosses the floor to where the woman is seated.

– The man makes eye-contact with the approaching leader before the couple steps onto the floor in the line of dance.

– We always use the milonguero close-embrace while dancing, keeping our feet on the floor.

– We maintain the line of dance in counter-clockwise direction around the floor.

– We dance not just with our partners but with other men in the line of dance, and make periodic eye-contact with men in front of and behind us in the Ronda.

– We respect the space of other dancers and value their safety. We advance in the line of dance when space opens in front, making space for those following us and never move backwards into the line of dance.

– We avoid changing lanes or passing other dancers.

– We enter the line of dance respecting those already dancing. Couples wait for visual contact before entering the dance floor once the music has started.

– While at this Encuentro, we encourage you use it as an opportunity to meet and dance with new people and not just dance with those most familiar to you.

Following these Rules of Etiquette will provide a few lovely days of tango — the dance we all feel passionately about. If you share in this Philosophy of Tango Etiquette, we will be delighted to share the weekend with you. Otherwise, this experience may disappoint you.

The Encuentro will be gender balanced, with a limited number of participants. Entry to the event is only for those who have pre-registered and have been accepted for the weekend of dancing. Those who have pre-registered but have not been accepted will be placed on a waiting list.

This is a private event not open to the general public. On-site walk-up entry to individual milongas without pre-approval will not be permitted, except for Thursday’s pre-milonga.
