Dancing is a Skill, Sunday Waltz, Beginner Series in Swing and Waltz, Contra, Mini Match
Hello and Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

On Monday January 20 we are dancing Hustle, Foxtrot, Waltz, Salsa and Israeli with Andy at 5:30. On Thursday January 23 we are dancing West Coast Swing, Lindy, Foxtrot, Waltz and Argentine Tango with Andy at 7 pm. At Congregation B'nai Israel, 3830 NW 16 Blvd. $10 per night, $5 students.
Starting January 30 join our Beginner Series in Swing, Waltz and Argentine Tango with Andy at 7 pm. $60 for 4 week series for new dancers. If you have some experience, or you have taken the beginner series before, you can drop-in for $10 per night, $5 students. Experienced dancers can review the basics and practice at the same time.
Tonight Saturday January 18 is the monthly evening Contra Dance at the Boltin Center at 7 pm preceded by Waltzing. $10
Sunday afternoon January 19 come out for Vintage Waltz with Richard with a lesson at 1:30 and dancing from 2 to 4:30, at Rena's Ballroom. $10
Sunday in Ocala is a full day of festivities at the Ballroom Dance Mini Match Competition with Ray and Eileen.

Dancing is a Skill
Dancing is a skill, not knowledge.
We often say you are learning to dance, but that is wrong. You do not learn to dance. You acquire the skill of dancing. You acquire skill by doing, not by learning.
People sometimes mention to me things other people do that they would like to see the other person do better.
They might say a person takes too small steps, or pushes and pulls, or is hard to lead, or does not lead clearly, or does not keep time to the music, or is not doing the basic steps correctly.
Most of the time, I am already aware of the issues with each person.
What you need to keep in mind is that people cannot change what they are doing in the short term.
People only acquire skill gradually.
When your enjoyment of your dance experience depends on the skill level of the other person, you have a problem that is beyond your control to fix.
You may be able to fix your problem, if you can change your expectations. Changing your expectations, sometimes, is easier than changing someone else's skill level.
As my Balboa teacher Christian Campbell said, sometimes you have an awesome dance with someone. Later on you go looking for that same person. The next time the dancing sucks. That is social dancing. Embrace the awesomeness. Embrace the suckiness.
