Gainesville Ocala Swing and Social Dance Newsletter

Hello and Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

Another great weekend of dancing in Gainesville. We have so many good choices, both in dances and partners, I can hardly ever work up any motivation to go out of town.

Friday UF Swing Club has three different lessons going on before dancing starts at 9.

Saturday night is an elegant Tango Pavadita Milonga at 308 West.

Also Saturday night is a Contra Dance, followed on Sunday morning by the first Vintage Waltz brunch in a while, with Randy and Annette teaching. I will lead a Nordic Waltz mixer that I picked up in Chicago this summer from a visiting Swedish folk dance group. That is a mouthful. See the Gainesville Ocala folk dance newsletter for details.

Hustle! is this Sunday February 20. It really is fun. Join us.

UF Tango Club met Thursday, not Friday this week. You can meet them this weekend at a mini milonga before Tango Inferno performs at the Phillips Center on Sunday February 20 at 7 pm.

Next Thursday 2/24 Christian is teaching Balboa at 308 West. This is regularly scheduled on the fourth Thursday of the month.

Reserve the First Saturday Night of the Month for our Swinging Soul Dance Party. The next one is March 5.

Ballroom Dancing at GHFC with Caroline Picart is March 18 to April 15 on Friday nights at 7:30.

The #1 Gators last home gymnastics meet is this Friday 2/18 at 7pm. Let me know if you want to join me.

Am thinking about opening up the studio at 308 West for dance practice during some evenings on some Tuesdays thru Fridays. Let me know what evenings would be best, what kind of dancing you would be interested in and whether you would like lessons or just do your own thing.

Joan Frosch's theatre and dance program "2280 Pints" is at the UF Nadine McGuire Pavillion February 18-27.

You can catch another West Coast Swing workshop and party with Stephen White and Sabrina Paxmann about an hour away in Wildwood on Saturday. www.DanceDanceDance.biz

Do not let cost keep you away from dancing. We have plenty of things for you to do if you would like to volunteer your time.

Happy Dancing,
Andy

Article: Make Mistakes with a Lot of Confidence

First relax, and be able to absorb things, and be able to do it without any fear that maybe you will make mistakes.

Since my job, my duty is to encourage the dancers and not to discourage them, I'm trying to give them an idiom by telling them, "Don't worry about the mistakes. Make mistakes with a lot of confidence."

Don't hesitate, because when you are hesitating then all your body is freezing and you are afraid to move, because you are afraid to make mistakes. You can't move this way when your mind is just thinking about the mistakes that you might do.

The dance needs relaxation and not a tight body. I'm giving them an idea: don't worry.

Sometimes students want to impress the teacher and I don't think that this is something good. They don't want to disappoint the teacher, or disappoint themselves.

We are human beings and we make mistakes. I used to use a phrase that said: perfection is a value of God; but the ambition to be perfect is the value of mankind.

We are trying to achieve the best we can. But, when we make mistakes from time to time, it gives us a message that there is no space for another God.
